Here’s why we wish Jaya Bachchan returns to acting

Jaya Bachchan has turned 68 today. Although she has time and again, proved herself to be a character actor of tremendous calibre in her 60s, she has been avoiding a full-time career before the camera.

Of late, Mrs Bachchan has been seen only in a pivotal cameo in R Balki’s Ki & Ka. Obviously, she has been very fastidious about her selection of roles.

Part of the reason for staying away from the studios is that she’s busy with her responsibilities as a Samajwadi Party-nominated Member of Parliament. Presumably the other reason is that she hasn’t been challenged by the roles offered to her lately. A pity, that.

Mrs Bachchan’s birthday is always brought in every year with warmth from her family. Amitabh Bachchan is always known to select a special gift for his artistically inclined wife. Some years ago, he had gifted her a painting done by an eminent artist

This was Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s coming-of-age account of a schoolgirl who’s besotted by actor Dharmendra and grows out of the crush. Incidentally, Amitabh Bachchan was cast as the male lead. However, Hrishida felt he was miscast, and reshot the scenes which had already been shot, by replacing today’s Big Boss with Samir Bhanja.

Gulzar’s adaptation of the Japanese film, Happiness Of Us Alone, showcased Jaya Bhaduri and Sanjeev Kumar as a deaf and dumb couple. Sanjeev Kumar won the National Award for Best Actor for his performance. Jaya didn’t. She has always teased Gulzar for making her character die prematurely in the script.

JAWANI DIWANI (1972)

Jaya Bhaduri broke out of the mould of the simple girl-next-door to go glam in the company of Randhir Kapoor. Remembered for catching her in a playful mood, particularly during the song Jaane jaan dhoondta phir raha, the film spawned a sequel of sorts, Dil Diwana, but that didn’t find favour with the audiences.

ABHIMAAN (1973)

The last few scenes for the climax set in a theatre auditorium were picturised by Hrishida shortly after his lead players, Amitabh and Jaya Bhaduri tied the knot. An adaptation of Hollywood’s A Star is Born, the film was loved for its emotionally powerful performances and an outstanding music score by S D Burman. A silk sari with a purple border seen in the film had been presented as a personal gift by Amitabh Bachchan to Jaya Bhaduri. It was not the type of sari she liked to wear personally. So she used it for the movie, and it set off a fashion trend.

KORA KAGAZ (1974)

Anil Ganguly’s remake of the Bengali film Saat Paake Bandha, featuring Suchitra Sen-Soumnitra Chatterjee, in its Hindi version pitted Jaya Bachchan against Vijay Anand. In this drama about marital strife, Jaya invested deep conviction into the role of a woman of sense and substance.
